“He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.”
~ 2 Corinthians 5:21
There is a key verse that is foundational for the believer of the New Covenant of Grace.
Therefore they said to Him, “What shall we do, so that we may work the works of God?” Jesus answered and said to them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He has sent.”
~ John 6:28-29
Notice that Jesus changed the verbiage. They asked about “works”, He said there is only one “work”-BELIEVE! Believe what? Who He says He is and believe who He says we are. That is foundational because the weakness of our own flesh, the world and the devil are constantly making a case against Jesus and all that He has said and continues to say to us and about us. How quickly we let others, situations, circumstances and our own weakness define God, ourselves and others, just as Adam and Eve did. The Old Covenant set us up to perform to get our God-given needs (love, acceptance, worth and security) met because of our Adamic sinful nature.
This key verse shatters all performance (performing for acceptance by God or anyone). Why? Jesus made us acceptable to God by taking the punishment for all sin and rendering us righteous out of our union with Him (His nature). (2 Corinthians 5:21) How? When Jesus spoke this, He was teaching the Jewish people, to whom He was sent, that the only requirement to be a Christ-follower was to believe, not perform by keeping the Law. It would be revealed after the Crucifixion that He had completed the works of God. The only thing for us to “do”-BELIEVE that He had accomplished everything for us to be in a saving, right relationship with The Father.
With that foundation in place and realizing that Jesus is the Cornerstone, knowing that He is the only One Who can meet our needs, will cement an intimate relationship with Him. Invite Him In! He is the Fountain of Life and that, my friends, is New Covenant Living!
